Disappointment
August 31, 2004
Agh, slightly disappointed that I couldn’t finish the site at the end of last week. However, I think the site’s internal structure improved because of the extra time and thought. Anyway, I’ll definitely be done by this Friday.
Its all complete but testing revealed one serious issue – duplicate submission of POST data, which is of course a common problem. I’ve seen banks solve this by simply telling people not to resubmit but there are definitely BETTER methods than warnings and one is to create a unique id for submission and if that id is again submitted, we have an occurrence of duplication.
Anyhow, depressed with the RNC… the speeches by McCain and Giuliani were pretty good, strengthening W.’s position. However, it is of course flowery talk. I was surprised at the low and direct attack by McCain at Moore, who was there. No shit the audience reacted the way they did… I respect McCain but damn that was disgraceful.
Well, to be fair, the big deal made by the Dems over W. saying he can’t win the war on terrorism is also kind of stupid and a no-no.
Anyway, still hopeful, but less so … let’s hope we see some strong debates.
Still have Faith… no, not in that sense.
Good Bye Summer Olympics! Till 2008, You Won’t Make TV Boring
August 29, 2004
I think the only part of the Olympics I’ve seen is the Opening Ceremony and I’ll try to catch the Closing Ceremony. Not being that big on sports, I have to say I’ve hated not having Leno, or some of the other shows, none of which I can think of at the moment, on NBC… Oh yea, Conan too. Well, looks like we’ll have them back on Monday! So, I am disgracefully (no, really) glad that the Olympics are finally over.
Anyway, still sort of excited about what’s going to be happening with the RNC in New York… heh heh. Anxious to see how this election and all things (esp. debates) leading up to it will turn out. I really hope I’ll be saying Good Bye to Dubya.
Well, the site is still going fairly well… the progress has slowed down a bit because thats how things turn out anyway. However, I am now in the adding final touches phase. After this, testing, and then creating some help content.
Saw a good movie again…
When you come in on Mondays, and you’re not feeling too well, does anybody ever come up to you and say “sounds like someone’s got a case of the Mondays”? No. No, man, shit, no, man. I believe you get your ass kicked for sayin’ something like that, man.
Haha.
Microsoft
August 28, 2004
Microsoft has a new site design up that’s more standards compliant. They’ve made it uniform throughout the site. Check it out if you haven’t already.
My own site work has slowed down a bit since I’ve tried to get it to validate 100% (almost there). Also, I still have to finish up 2 features (rating and changes).
Excitement over the RNC … more over the protests and the front-line response.
XHTML Compliance
August 26, 2004
Argh, spent a lot of time bringing the site to XHTML 1.0 compliance. Basically, its more well-formed. It wasn’t so bad because it was already HTML 4.01 compliant.
Insomnia

Screw Dave Attell, I need sleep.
Conservatives,
con·ser·va·tive adj. Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.
Hmm, yes, that is exactly it… tending to oppose change (and progress).
Jon Stewart on the RNC: New York? Why not San Francisco? Hah.
“I think George Bush is going to win in a walk. I really believe I’m hearing from the Lord it’s going to be like a blowout election in 2004. The Lord has just blessed him…. It doesn’t make any difference what he does, good or bad.”

Moron.
I finally know the difference between a Jaffa and a Tok’ra.
Progress
August 25, 2004
Well, I’ve been working on this site for the past 2 days and its almost complete. I have 2 features to finish up but they are pretty much done. I still have to beautify a bit. However, I think I’m going to be able to finish it by the end of this week as I had planned. Of course, there is still 1 major feature (Search) left pending but I think I’m going to use a third party solution (Google most likely).
Hmm, I hear that Microsoft is automatic updating XP SP2, so here is What to do when the Windows break. No surprises.
Longhorn vs. Google
August 25, 2004
Well, we’re definitely on the path to .NETification and its a good thing no doubt. Longhorn, XAML, etc., etc., all sound great.
In fact, one of the greatest things that I found was WinFS… inputting all metadata into a (SQL) database and then using that on top of a regular filesystem. What better way to have people’s computer files stay cluttered and not have it be an issue?
Well, surfing around, it seems Google is planning to bring its search tech to the desktop. Clearly, this is going to be a huge battle.
Creative Spam

Spam is getting more creative.

Subject: pleaseThis time there was no mistake! A human voice responded to ours! Was it the voice of another unfortunate creature, abandoned in the middle of the ocean, some other victim of the shock sustained by the vessel? Or rather was it a boat from the frigate, that was hailing us in the darkness?

What the hell?
Anyway, I spent much of the morning cleaning up database access code. Going back and cleaning and organizing code is a good idea… means you can go back and actually know what’s going on.
Listening to System of a Down… Shimmy
Sci-Fi Bliss
August 24, 2004
So, its been a Sci-Fi Summer it seems…
First half, I saw the entire Farscape series (can’t wait till the miniseries) thanks to my roomie
Seen all of the new Stargate Atlantis
Getting caught up on Stargate SG-1… Stargate Mondays (5 episodes) and season one now playing every weekday at 6.
What else?
Saw some classics for the first time:
Casablanca – Like number two on the AFI list but meh, not my type… I liked Great Gatsby though (hopefully, you’ll see the connection)
Exorcist – This was hilarious… weird how the horror movies of past are now comedy. Who the hell thinks we’re not desensitized by TV
Godfather – Awesome… it’s just an excellent movie
Listening to Comfort Eagle after some time…
Ok… so, I have to bitch about the FULLTEXT search capabilities of MySQL… Not as great as I had hoped. I really want to write my own search for the site from previous post but that would throw the completion time way out.
So, LA is not so bad once you get used to it I suppose… Still not that great though.
“I want a girl with a short skirt….”
Mmm,… good stuff
Late Night
August 24, 2004
So, its 1:20 AM and I’m listening to Give Up. Feeling kind of sick or maybe thats just sleep. Anyway, I wanted to jot down a few notes on stuff I was doing because it seemed like a good idea at this time.
So, lets see:
Creating a site with PHP / MySQL, finding that there was a lot more to it than I orignally thought. But, it seems like it will be one of the few things I’ll actually complete. By the end of this week I should be done, tested and all.
Mmmm… time for some Page Avenue.
I found that Google’s search services are a little lacking (I mean for implementing them into your own website) unless you pay (I dont know how much that improves it of course). But thats ok… 3 billion is the estimate is it?
Starting to watch TechTV again… G4-TechTV now… It’s quite a stupid merger because now its just all about games about 90% of the time. The ScreenSavers is still pretty good but they need Leo back, or at least have Patrick to reduce the non-focused-ness.
So, Jon Stewart is the man. It’s Democrats’ answer to Rupert Murdoch and Fox News. Only thing is, The Daily Show is admittedly “Fake News” while Fox is dead serious. Idiots.
Mmmm… Ocean Avenue
